SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, measures the level of protection a product offers against ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is responsible for skin damage and increased risk of skin cancer. SPF testing is crucial for evaluating the effectiveness of sunscreens and other sun protection products. Accurate SPF testing not only helps consumers make informed choices about their sun protection needs, but also allows for targeted claim substantiation and comprehensive evaluation of UV protection properties.

  1. Determination of SPF Value in vitro: SPF is a measure of how much solar energy (UV radiation) is required to produce sunburn on protected skin (i.e., in the presence of sunscreen) relative to the amount of solar energy required to produce sunburn on unprotected skin. As the SPF value increases, sunburn protection increases.
  2. Broad Spectrum Analysis: According to the FDA, broad spectrum sunscreens protect against UVA and UVB rays, which are types of ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
  3. Boots Star Rating: Recognized in the UK, and also known as Boots Star Rating system, measures the UV transmittance through a sunscreen film.  PMMA plates are used as a substrate for measurement. The ratio between the mean UVA and UVB absorbance measured before and after irradiation of the sunscreen products is calculated.
  4. Determination of Critical Wavelength: The FDA considers a sunscreen to be broad spectrum if it has a critical wavelength of 370 nm or higher. 
  5. Water Resistance: To compare the SPF for a sunscreen product after a period of immersion in water with the original, static SPF of the product determined        according to the International SPF Test Method.
