Cosmetics, personal care, and homecare products play a crucial role in our daily life, providing hygiene, skincare, and household maintenance solutions. Proper analysis and quality control of these products are essential to ensure safety, efficacy, and regulatory compliance. 

FARE Labs, being an accredited (ISO/IEC 17025:2017) laboratory for the testing and quality control of these products, offers Cosmetic Laboratory Specialized Training in the analysis and quality control of these products, equipping participants with theoretical and practical knowledge of industry standards, testing methodologies, and regulatory requirements

Objectives

What is to learn?

This hands-on training course covers the following:

  • Importance of quality control in cosmetics and personal care industries
  • Classification and functions of different products
  • Physiochemical analysis: Description, pH value, Stability, Turbidity, Viscosity, Flash point, color value.
  • General analysis: For cosmetics products
    • Skin cream: IS 6608 – pH value, total fatty matter, thermal stability, total residue.
    • Shampoo: IS 7884- pH value, foam height, non-volatile alcohol soluble matter, Active ingredient (SLS).
    • Hair conditioner: IS 7679- Thermal stability, Total fatty matter, Water content and Rancidity and pH value.
    • Skin powder: IS 3959- Matter insoluble in boiling water, Moisture and volatile matter, pH value and fineness.
    • Lipstick: IS 9785- Softening point, Rancidity, Breaking load, Freedom from grittiness and pay off test.
    • Hair removal cream: IS 9636- pH value, Calcium thioglycolate, and Thermal stability.
    • Henna powder: IS 11142- Moisture and volatile matter, Cold water extract, Crude fibre, Mineral matter, Acid insoluble ash, Lawsone pigment and extraneous sand.
  • General analysis: For Soap and detergent products
    • Bathing soap: IS 13498- Lather, Free caustic alkali, Total fatty matter, free carbonated alkali and mush.
    • Toilet soap: IS 2888- Total fatty matter, Rosin acid, Matter insoluble in alcohol, Chlorides and free caustic alkali.
    • Baby soap: IS 10523- Total fatty matter, Moisture and volatile matter, Matter insoluble in water, Chlorides.
    • Detergent Powder: IS 4955- Active ingredient, Total phosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate, Active alkalinity, Percent detergency and ash built up.
  • General analysis: For Home care products
    • Toilet Cleaner: IS 7983- HCL content, Efficacy, sediment, lime scale, corrosion inhibition.
    • Floor cleaner: IS 14364- Total non-volatile matter, pH value, QAC content, cleaning property and stability.
    • Toothpaste: IS 6356- Fineness, Foaming power, fluoride content, pH value.
    • Glass cleaner: IS 8540- Water content, Flash point, Nonvolatile matter and pH value.
    • Diapers: IS 17509- Top sheet, Absorbent core, Barrier back sheet, types and sizes, absorption capacity, rate of absorption and rewet under load.
    • Dish wash: IS 6047- Retention, Active matter, Active alkalinity, Matter insoluble in alcohol, Moisture and volatile matter, Lather, Tough soil cleaning and surface damage.

1. Analytical Techniques & Instrumentation

    • Enhance chemical testing and ensure quality of product.
    • Detailed discussion Biodegradability of surfactant.
    • Determination of Stain removal study in washing machine, Efficacy of cleaning performance of dishwasher detergent.
    • Determination of SPF, In-vitro water resistance with SPF transmittance analyzer
    • Discuss method development and sample preparation techniques.
  • Application of SPF transmittance analyzer
    • SPF testing: Measure the SPF of sunscreen and sunblock’s to ensure compliance and claims.
    • In vitro water resistance testing Performing water resistance in sunscreens, Moisturizers, lip balms,
    • Stability testing evaluate the stability of sunscreens products over the time to ensure the effectiveness of the sunscreen.
  •  Application of Spectrophotometer
    • Identification and quantification of pigments in hair products like henna powder, hair dyes
    • Identification and quantification of phosphate in Homecare products.
    • Identification and quantification of active ingredients in cosmetics, personal care and homecare products.

 

2. Product-Specific Testing & Analysis

  • Cosmetics & Skincare: Lipsticks, creams, lotions, sunscreens, shampoos, conditioners, face wash and scrub, face masks, serums.
  • Personal Care: Toothpaste, deodorants, body washes, soaps, hand sanitizers, hair dyes, shaving gels, and nail polishes
  • Homecare: Detergents, disinfectants, floor cleaners, glass cleaners, dishwashing liquids, fabric softeners, room fresheners, diapers and sanitary napkin.

 

3. Hands-On Training

  • Sample preparation and extraction techniques for different matrices
  • Instrument calibration and standardization
  • Application of various testing methods on real-world samples
  • Step-by-step guidance on data acquisition and interpretation.
  1. Adherence to Safety Protocols: Strictly follow all laboratory safety guidelines and protocols to prevent accidents and ensure the well-being of all participants.
  2. Active Participation: Engage actively in all training sessions, discussions, and practical exercises. Complete all assigned tasks and projects on time.
  3. Respect for Equipment and Facilities: Handle all laboratory equipment and materials with care. Report any damages or malfunctions to the instructor immediately.
  4. Collaboration and Teamwork: Work collaboratively with fellow participants, sharing knowledge and supporting each other’s learning.
  5. Integrity and Accuracy: Maintain a high standard of integrity in all testing procedures and documentation. Ensure that all results are accurate and reliable.
