Overview

A torque wrench is a precision tool used to apply a specific amount of torque (rotational force) to a Fastener like a nut or bolt.

Why Use a Torque Wrench?

  • Prevents over-tightening (which can break bolts or damage parts)
  • Prevents under-tightening (which can cause loosening or failure)
  • Ensures safety and reliability, especially in critical systems

Purpose of Torque Wrench Calibration

The purpose of calibrating a torque wrench is to ensure that it applies the correct amount of torque to fasteners. Proper calibration guarantees accuracy, prevents over-tightening or under-tightening, and ensures safety and reliability in critical applications.

Parameters to be tested

The following parameters are evaluated during torque wrench calibration to ensure accuracy and reliability of the tool:

A. Repeatability
Checks the ability of the torque wrench to provide consistent readings when the same torque is applied multiple times under identical conditions. This ensures stability and reliability in repeated operations.

B. Reproducibility
Evaluates the variation in measurements when the torque wrench is used under different conditions, such as different operators or setups. It ensures that results remain consistent across varying environments.

C. Geometric Effect of the Output Drive of the Torque Tool
Assesses the influence of the tool’s physical design, including the drive size and alignment, on the applied torque. Any geometric variation can affect the accuracy of torque transmission.

D. Variation of Interface between the Tool and the Calibration System
Examines the impact of the connection between the torque wrench and the calibration equipment. Improper fitting or interface variations may introduce measurement errors.

E. Variation of Torque Loading Point
Analyzes the effect of applying force at different points along the handle. Changes in the loading point can alter the effective torque applied, impacting measurement accuracy.

Calibration of torque wrenches offers multiple benefits. It improves product quality by ensuring that all fasteners meet specified torque requirements. It enhances accuracy and reliability, leading to consistent performance. Proper calibration helps extend equipment life by preventing damage caused by incorrect tightening. It also improves safety by reducing the risk of mechanical failures. Additionally, it results in cost savings by minimizing rework, downtime, and maintenance expenses. Calibration also ensures compliance with ISO and other regulatory standards.
