CTM, UTM & TTM Calibration

CTM – Compression Testing Machine

A Compression Testing Machine is a device used to measure the behaviour of materials under compressive load (pushing force). It determines how a material behaves when subjected to crushing or compressive forces until failure.

UTM – Universal Testing Machine

A Universal Testing Machine is a versatile machine used to test materials under both tension (pulling) and compression (pushing) forces. It evaluates multiple mechanical properties of materials.

TTM – Tensile Testing Machine

A Tensile Testing Machine is specifically designed to measure material behaviour under tensile load (pulling force). It determines how a material stretches and breaks when pulled.

What is Force Calibration?

Force calibration is the process of verifying and adjusting force-measuring instruments such as Universal Testing Machines (UTM), CTM & TTM,  Load cells, Force Gauges, and compression/tension testing systems to ensure their readings are accurate and traceable to national/international standards. Accurate force measurement ensures that the applied load corresponds exactly to the displayed value, minimizing errors in testing, inspection, and manufacturing processes.

Purpose of Force Calibration

The purpose of force calibration is to make sure that “the force you apply is the force you measure.” and it is important for given point of view.

  • Prevents incorrect measurement results that may lead to product failure
  • Ensures compliance with ISO and regulatory standards
  • Enhances safety in load-bearing applications
  • Improves reliability and repeatability of test results
  • Reduces rejection, rework, and operational risks

Application of Force Calibration in Industry

Force calibration is widely used in given industries below

  • Automotive Industry – Testing of components like suspension, braking systems, and structural parts
  • Aerospace Industry – High-precision load verification for safety-critical components
  • Manufacturing & Engineering – Material strength testing and quality control
  • Construction & Infrastructure – Structural load testing and validation
  • Oil & Gas Industry – Equipment testing under high-load conditions
  • Power Plants – Mechanical integrity testing
  • Research & Development Labs – Experimental force analysis

Parameters Evaluated in Force Calibration

The following key parameters are evaluated to ensure accuracy and reliability

  1. Repeatability
Assesses the ability of the instrument to produce consistent results under identical conditions over multiple measurements.
  2. Reproducibility
Evaluates measurement variation when tests are performed under different conditions such as operators, setups, or environments.
  3. Linearity of Force Measurement
Determines how accurately the instrument measures force across its entire range, ensuring proportional response between applied and measured force.
  4. Hysteresis Effect
Analyzes the difference in readings during increasing and decreasing force cycles, which can impact measurement accuracy.
  5. Alignment and Load Application Effect
Checks the influence of misalignment or improper load application on the measurement results.
  • Improved Measurement Accuracy – Ensures precise force readings
  • Enhanced Product Quality – Maintains consistency in production
  • Safety Assurance – Prevents failures in critical applications
  • Extended Equipment Life – Avoids damage due to incorrect loading
  • Cost Efficiency – Reduces downtime, rework, and maintenance costs
  • Regulatory Compliance – Meets ISO/IS requirements
