Proprietary food is a category which includes all the food products that have not been standardised under the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2011. It is a new category introduced by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, to bring about the uniformity in the stringency of regulatory standards for all kinds of food products. This initiative also led to the growth in the development and processing of innovative food products.
As part of the application for product approval of a proprietary food, the food business operators are required to submit a certificate of analysis from an NABL accredited and FSSAI recognized laboratory like FARE Labs for testing such as confirming the label claims like nutritional label and values. The manufacturer of such a product shall clearly mention on the label, that the food product is a proprietary food.
