What are Pesticides?

Pesticides are substances that are meant to control pests or weeds. The term pesticide includes: herbicide, insecticide, insect growth regulator, nematicide, termiticide, molluscicide, avicide, rodenticide, predacide, bactericide, insect repellent, animal repellent, antimicrobial, fungicide, disinfectant (antimicrobial), and sanitizer.

Pesticide Residues and Human Health

Pesticides are regarded as potentially toxic compounds to humans. Their extensive usage in agriculture leaves unconsumed pesticides as residue. The consumption of food with these residues may be responsible for causing adverse health effects including cancer, effects on reproduction, immune or nervous systems. Long term exposure to these pesticide residues may cause severe health complications, for example, occupational exposure to the organic pesticide namely, rotenone has been linked with an increased risk of Parkinson’s disease. Before they can be authorized for use, pesticides should be tested for all possible health effects and the results should be analyzed by experts to assess any risks to humans.

Testing and Monitoring of Pesticide Residue

It is therefore, duty and responsibility of the regulatory authorities’ to test, monitor and control the growing use of pesticides each year. This control is vital to protect the health of consumers, agricultural workers and the environment. Yet, keeping up to date with new national/international regulations and maximum reside levels (MRLs) for food products is a challenge for any food supplier. It becomes therefore, mandatory to test and analyze the food items for the quantitative analysis of pesticide residues in various food products to ensure that the residues are within their MRLs.
